Air India Expands in Australia

Following 16 years of discontinued service in Australia, Air India will commence direct flights from Delhi to Sydney and Melbourne this month. The route will start on August 29 serviced by a 256-seat Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. For four days a week the route will serve Delhi to Sydney to Melbourne to Delhi, for three days a week the flight will serve Delhi to Melbourne to Sydney to Delhi.

Prior to the Air India service announcement Singapore Airlines dominated travel between Australia and India. Air India last offered service to Australia in 1997 with Perth flights, prior to that Sydney was last served in 1991 by the airline. Qantas also discontinued service to India in May last year but has indicated it may resume flights to Mumbai in the future.

Air India has promotional fares of about US$840 return economy to Delhi, and about $2,250 for business class from Melbourne. Flights are now available for booking on Air India’s website.
