The flag carrier of India has just joined Star Alliance, marking the 27th airline member of the group. As India is the fifth largest aviation market in the world, Air India adds 400 daily flights and more than 40 new destinations to the network as well as boosts the Alliance’s market share in India to 30 percent. Not only does this benefit Alliance customers flying domestically within India, but it also offers a wider choice of flights connecting internationally; Air India operates services to 50 destinations in India as well as 33 internationally in 23 different countries. “We have said for many years that we needed a strong home carrier in the Indian market and by welcoming Air India to our Star Alliance family, we have achieved this goal” said Star Alliance Chief Executive Mark Schwab. “We know that the ‘new’ Air India is looking forward to providing the Star Alliance customer benefits to many more travelers.”
