Getting to the Himalayan mountain kingdom of Bhutan has never been easy — even in an airplane.
Later this year Bhutan’s flag carrier Drukair will offer services from Singapore and Hong Kong to its home base of Paro Airport (pictured above).
The airport, sitting at an elevation of 2,200 meters and surrounded by mountains of up to 5,500 meters, is one of the most challenging in the world for pilots, who are required to fly by vision only.
The services to Singapore and Hong Kong await the delivery of single-aisle Airbus A319 aircraft, more of which the carrier ordered in mid-February. The delivery date of those remains to be seen. The plane slated for use on the Singapore service is expected around September.
In other news, Drukair has announced that in August it will conduct charter flights to Tokyo to test the market.
