It seems that the three terminals of Dubai International airport aren’t enough to handle the nearly 58 million passengers it served in 2012. Ranked the 10th busiest airport in the world by the Airports Council International, Dubai International has a new ally in serving its thriving commercial traffic. Opened on October 27, Al Maktoum International airport at Dubai World Central (airport code DWC) welcomed its first flight, a commercial Wizz Air flight from Budapest, onto its tarmac. Al Maktoum International is currently operating a single runway, though it ultimately plans to operate five. The runway is capable of handling an A380 landing and has 64 remote aircraft stands to serve a up to 7 million passengers a year. Officials expect a total capacity of 160 million visitors annually when the airport is completed in 2027. So far, just three airline have confirmed service with the airport: low-cost Hungarian provider, Wizz Air, the national carrier of Bahrain, Gulf Air, and low-cost carrier from Kuwait, Jazeera Airways.
