Doha’s US$15 billion international airport has been revealed following a decade of construction and nearly four years of delays. Hamad International Airport occupies 29 square kilometers (about a third of the size of Doha) and is projected to support an annual capacity of 50 million passengers—for scale the world’s busiest airport, Atlanta, serves 89 million passengers annually. The undulating steel structure takes cues from the waves of the Arabian Gulf for its architectural design. Building materials were sourced from 40 countries around the world using a workforce of 23,000 individuals. The Emiri Terminal continues the aquatic theme of the structure, resembling a drop of water using 1,600 pieces of glass and more than 200,000 mosaic tiles. The new check-in and retail areas are large enough to fit ten wide-body aircraft, and the terminal hosts four lounges featuring furniture by industrial designer Marc Newsom. Rapidly expanding national flag carrier Qatar Airways will use the airport as its primary hub while airlines including Etihad Airways, SriLankan Airlines, Royal Jordanian Airlines, and Kuwait Airways have already begun operating from the new airport.
