The previously all-coach cabin of JetBlue Airways will now feature lie-flat seats on transcontinental flights by 2014. JetBlue will also be the first and only airline in the market to have private suites for passengers with a closable door for privacy. The lie-flat seats will debut in the second quarter of 2014 according to the airline on its two most popular routes, New York to Los Angeles and New York to San Francisco.

The move is significant as JetBlue is credited with innovating the American market for low-cost airlines by completely removing premium classes in favor of more amenities and space in the economy cabin.

“Our customers have requested more premium options on our transcontinental flights and we listened,” said JetBlue CEO Dave Barger. “We decided to enter the premium transcontinental market in a way that only JetBlue can: with an intense focus on offering the best possible product for the best possible price.”

The lie-flat seats will alternate rows, with private suites in every even row. Northern Ireland-based Thompson Aero Seating designed the seat to include air cushions with adjustable firmness, a massage function, a 15-inch widescreen television, and a “wake-me-for-service” indicator allowing the customer to choose when they are served.
