Kuala Lumpur’s Low-Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) will cease operations on May 9, 2014 following the opening of Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (KLIA2) on May 2. Budget airlines including Cebu Pacific, Air Malindo, Tigerair, and Tigerair Mandala will move operations to the new airport. The new 257,000-square-meter KLIA2 is located in Sepang, 1.5 kilometers from Kuala Lumpur International Airport, and is expected to accommodate 45 millions passengers annually. Meanwhile, AirAsia is expected to be the new airport’s largest carrier accounting for more than 80 percent of air traffic. The budget airline, however, has refused to move to the new space from its current stronghold at LCCT citing interruptions and insufficient facilities despite the aging airport’s eminent closing date.
