Scoot Airlines, the low-cost carrier of Singapore Airlines, has announced that it will create a child-free seating section on their flights. Passengers who pay US$14 to upgrade are guaranteed a seat in rows 21 to 25 with no children below the age of 12 and extra legroom. The area dubbed “ScootinSilence” will not completely ban infants from Scoot flights, but will instead ensure that patrons in the select section will not be seated next to or near a wailing child. Passengers who chose to upgrade will also benefit from a 35″ pitch, four more inches than the standard economy seat. Scoot follows the precedent set by other regional airlines including AirAsia which created a “Quiet Zone” this year and Malaysia Airlines that started an adults-only economy deck in 2012 and banned infants from its first-class service. Launched by Singapore Airlines in the summer of 2012, Scoot currently flies to 11 destinations in Asia and Australia.
