United announced that it would replace the Boeing 747-400s used on its Australia-United States route with new Boeing 777s starting April 1 next year. The airline flies daily between Sydney and Melbourne to Los Angeles and San Francisco, and while the new 777s will reduce the total number of seats from 374 to 269, the new aircrafts will come with a slew of improvements. The 777 is divided into three cabins with eight First Class seats, 40 Business Class seats, 117 Economy Plus seats, and 104 Economy seats. Economy and Economy Plus seats will now have personal seatback TVs with on-demand inflight entertainment and power outlets, while Business and First Class passengers will enjoy flatbeds and Wi-Fi.

The reduced number of seats will likely boost the returns on fares for United and its competitors. Qantas, Virgin Australia, Delta Air Lines, and Hawaiian all fly Australia-US routes.
