Traveling in Japan can be confusing enough for first-timers, without even considering the sheer variety of transport options.

As such, the bullet train (or shinkansen), a high-speed and convenient mode of transport in Japan, is a popular choice for its sheer speed and efficiency.

The train system connects major cities such as Tokyo, Osaka, Hakata, and Hiroshima, as well as tourist destinations like Mount Fuji.

Thanks to a new, free app released by Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central) and West Japan Railway Company (JR West), travelers can easily book a ride on the country’s popular bullet train line.

The Tokaido Sanyo Shinkansen Reservation App, available in English, allows users to purchase tickets for the Tokaido Sanyo bullet train line. The train line is Japan’s main artery, which connects the above-mentioned cities.

App users can book and buy tickets outside of Japan, before collecting tickets from the ticket machines at Tokaido Sanyo Shinkansen stations using the same credit card.

Best of all, it also allows booking changes without incurring additional charges, up to four minutes before departure.

The app is available in the United States, Australia, Singapore, and Hong Kong.
