In Spain, the historic and luxurious Abadia Retuerta LeDomain hotel—housed in a 12th-century abbey and set on its own vineyards—has recently been complimenting its 900-year-old history with some modern updates. First, it added Google Glass as an amenity last August, and now it has a new spa, El Santuario, opening July 1 featuring treatments designed around the hotel’s favorite drink: wine. Vinotherapy is nothing new in the spa industry, but LeDomaine is uniquely incorporating wine tastings into the personalization process of its treatments. Led by a resident Spa Sommelier, guests begin with a blind taste-test of wines and smelling of different oils meant to tap into their physical and emotional states, and their preferences will guide the sommelier’s recommendation of treatments, many of which incorporate grape seeds and grape essences, meant to counter the effects of aging with potent antioxidants and relax with aromatherapy. There are also non-vinotherapy treatments based in Chinese medicine and modern science, such as a cyrotherapy facial that fills each pore with pure oxygen. The spa itself comprises four treatment rooms and one larger suite along with indoor and outdoor pools, a hydrotherapy pool, saunas and steam baths, and additional amenities such as a spa cuisine menu, yoga, meditation, and Qigong.
