TOMS shoes creates jobs for local Haitian artists with shoe design.

Shoe-lovers and do-gooders will be clamoring to see the second half of TOMs’ Haiti Artist Collective (toms.com) collection in July. TOMS, a socially conscious shoe company, teamed up with Port-au-Prince-based artisans’ association Caribbean Craft to commission 30 local artists to hand-paint a limited-edition range of canvas shoes in a bid to create sustainable jobs in Haiti, which suffers from one of the worst employment rates in the world. The shoes all bear Haitian scenes or motifs and the first part of the collection, which was unveiled in March, has nearly sold out. A pair costs US$68 and as with all TOMS footwear, for each purchase, the company will donate a pair of shoes to a child in need.
