Spanish and South American fever has been a common theme in Hong Kong this year, but most of the innovations have been restricted to the kitchen. Fortunately Concept Creations, owners of Peruvian restaurant Chicha, have made the move to cocktails with their new Peruvian-themed cocktail joint, The Roger Room.
Located across from Chica on Peel Street—a new emerging hotspot for themed bars and hole-in-the-wall mixology—The Roger Room comes complete with a skull and crossbones above the front door, plenty of timber accents, elegant bamboo furniture, portholes that peer into the kitchen, and a starry night-sky effect on the ceiling.
Of course pisco, Peru’s signature grape brandy, which lends plenty of tropical grassiness to fruity cocktails, is in the limelight here. Concoctions like the Jolly Roger, a playful blend of pisco, mixed berries, lime, and sparkling cava, are a wonderfully sweet touch before a meal, while the Pisco Sour, the hallmark of pisco cocktails, is silky and palate-pleasing thanks to a perfect combination of lime, sugar, and egg white. Be sure to ask about the house collection of signature spirits, which the bar ages in oak barrels.
You can also pair your cocktails with snacks from Chicha’s kitchen, including pan con chicharones, a Peruvian take on the mini-burger slider with pork and sweet salsa, and a selection of one-hand-friendly tacos that are still sizzling as they cross Peel Street.
