Baliophiles are sure to find inspiration in the pages of Time, Rites and Festivals in Bali (BAB Books; US$40), a richly illustrated tome by Bali specialists Georges Breguet and Jean Couteau. Exploring what makes the island’s ceremonial and ritual life tick, the new release untangles the mystifying complexity of Bali’s ancient calendar systems, as well as the cosmological and spiritual underpinnings of the traditional Balinese conception of time. Edifying as it is accessible, it’s also lovely to behold, thanks to dozens of specially commissioned drawings by I Gusti Nyoman Darta, great-nephew of the legendary Balinese artisit I Gusti Nyoman Lempad. –David Tse
