Following the success of its much-loved annual literary festival, the Balinese town of Ubud is to embark on another yearly get-together. The first Ubud Village Jazz Festival is slated for August 9 and 10 and promises to welcome a lineup of as many as 100 Indonesian and international musicians to the grounds of the Arma Museum. World-class Dutch pianist Peter Beets is one of the bill’s early standouts, while other confirmed acts include the Ito Kurdi Quartet and American saxophonist Joe Rosenberg. “The idea to hold an international Jazz Festival was born after Serambi Arts Antida in Denpasar was forced to close in 2012,” says festival director Anom Darsana. “Since then we have held highly successful Jazz Rendezvous events as a lead-up to this festival. The musicians we have invited support our mission to promote high-quality jazz from around the world to a discerning audience.” A series of fringe food and drink events is in the works for the weekend, as are a no-plastic-bag policy and other initiatives that residents and visitors alike will no doubt warm to. Tickets are expected to go on sale soon.
