The largest of three small islands off the northwest coast of Lombok, Trawangan has long been seen as a quieter alternative to Bali. For one thing, you won’t hear any motorized traffic on Gili T, as it’s commonly known; just the metronomic clip-clop of horse-drawn carts taking visitors from the central jetty out to the island’s laid-back, airy digs. The secret’s out on Trawangan—The Observer newspaper asked in 2010 if it was “the new Ibiza,” and new accommodation is springing up fast.
