The latest addition to Doha’s fast-changing skyline is sure to raise a few eyebrows. In the heart of the futuristic City Centre shopping complex, the 291 rooms at the W exude a cheeky, ’60s ski-lodge feel with shimmering curtains, mood lighting, and exceptionally comfy beds. Party-people will want to splurge on the 290-square-meter Extreme Wow Suite, which comes with a snooker table, several aquariums, and such quirks as an almost life-size plastic horse with a lamp fixture stuck in its head. The chirpy young staff (representing some 52 different nationalities) spend much of their time zipping around the expansive property, which includes French bistro La Maison du Caviar, two Jean-Georges Vongerichten restaurants, and a Teuscher chocolate shop. When you’re done exploring the culinary options, kick back on colorful cabanas overlooking a multi-tiered lap pool with underwater music and fiber-optic lighting, or try one of the unusual treatments at Bliss Spa. Quadruple “thigh-pass” massage, anyone? (West Bay; 974/453-5353; whotels.com; doubles from US$245).
