Inspired by its waterfront position on one of the world’s largest ports, Rotterdam’s newest hotel has been designed with nods to distant shores. Feran Thomassen has decked out each floor at Mainport to portray a different continent—stay in an Antarctic-themed guest room for the white and icy blue palette with snowflake detailing, or opt for a grainy, almost Gotham-like interpretation of New York on the North American floor. Corner rooms have windows on two sides, conferring wider views of the inner harbor, while the top-floor spa suite includes its own sauna and a living area complete with fireplace. Down Under’s menu is broad, in keeping with the rest of the hotel—expect Argentinian beef rubbing shoulders with sashimi—while cocktail bar On The Rocks adds another venue of note to arguably the Netherlands’ most exciting city.

Opens May 13; Leuvehaven 77; 31-10/217-5757; doubles from US$190
