Play Your Cards Right
From its historic hutong alleys to its skyscraper-studded CBD, there’s never a dull moment on the bustling streets of Beijing—provided you have Eric Abrahamsen’s Beijing by Foot (immersion guides.com; US$15) as your guide.
Abrahamsen, a seven-year resident of the Chinese capital, has produced a series of 40 neighborhood walks designed to help you navigate “the real city behind the tourist facade.” Each is printed on a pocket-size card with a bilingual map on one side and descriptions of the area’s history and attractions on the other. Also noted are places to eat and drink, so you’ll know where to rest your feet en route.
