CARE Australia gets another US$40,000 for continuing Tsunami Relief
Support from Indonesian Publisher and the Travel Industry
Melbourne, August 30, 2005—Indonesian publisher and businessman, Ronald Liem, today formally presented CARE Australia with another US$40,000 for use in its ongoing work on Tsunami relief.
The funds were collected through an in-print, on-line auction of travel industry prizes by Mr Liem’s flagship magazine, DestinAsian, published every two months by his Jakarta-based DestinAsian Media Group.
“This was a good opportunity to keep the Tsunami relief effort before the public,” Mr Liem said after making the presentation in Melbourne. “We must not forget that recovery from the impact of the Tsunami is a long term effort and an ongoing one.”
He said that with all the difficulties now facing the world it sometimes seemed that people had lost sight of the Tsunami relief effort.
“But I know as an Indonesian – and as an Asian traveler – that the relief efforts are ongoing and the rebuilding work is as important as ever to the people of the worst affected regions in south east Asia,” he said.
“I would to thank all those in the Asian travel industry who gave prizes to the auction effort and all of our readers who supported the auction. It shows the true heart of the travel industry in the region.”
“DestinAsian’s contribution demonstrates their commitment to being a good regional neighbour,” Mr Robert Glasser, Chief Executive, CARE Australia said. “It will enable CARE to expand its reconstruction efforts on Simeulue Island in Indonesia, where tens of thousands of people have had their lives torn apart in the Boxing Day tsunami and subsequent March 28th earthquake,” he said.
Mr Liem said he was pleased his DestinAsian Media Group had been able to play a small role in supporting the work of CARE Australia in its ongoing work in Tsunami relief and reconstruction throughout affected areas of south east Asia.
The DestinAsian Media Group began operations in Jakarta in 2001 and apart from DestinAsian itself, now publishes several lifestyle publications. Mr Liem is both Publisher and Managing Director of the Group.
Born in and raised in Indonesia, but educated in the UK and the US, he returned to the country as an investment banker before joining the family business in property and the duty free retailing areas.
