Tucked behind a luxury mall in the center of Jakarta, the Keraton at the Plaza (Jl. M.H. Thamrin, Kav. 15; 62-21/5068-0000; starwoodhotels.com; doubles from US$550) takes its name and inspiration from the historic sultans’ palaces of Java. The hotel’s public spaces exude a bold masculine atmosphere, especially in the lobby with its dark marble floors, windows framed by steel, and a towering batik-patterned latticework. From here, a receptionist escorts guests to one of 140 rooms, where the modern atmosphere gives way to softer furnishings, like the foliate artworks, commissioned by design consultancy Hadiprana, that grace the walls. On the seventh floor, where the pool, gym, and spa are located, guests can also enjoy a meal from a lush, garden-like restaurant with views of the Indonesian capital’s northern skyline. –Angela Leenhouts
