Macau Attractions: the Science Center

Four years and some US$100 million in the making, the Macao Science Center (Avenida Dr. Sun Yat-sen; 853/2888-0822; msc.org.mo) is as much an architectural attraction as it is an educational one. Designed by Pritzker Prize–winning architect I. M. Pei, the shimmering waterfront development is a sci-fi fantasy of glass, mirrors, and steel. Fourteen galleries spiral down the conical main building, which is topped by a domed observation deck overlooking the harbor. The adjoining planetarium is one of the most advanced in the world. When you’re not stargazing, lose yourself in the center’s 450-odd interactive exhibits, exploring everything from extreme weather to intelligent androids and the future of space travel. China’s contributions to the world of science are not forgotten either, with an entire gallery dedicated to the country’s achievements in astronomy, mechanics, and architecture. –ND
