A Tribute to John F. Kennedy

The Dallas Museum of Art commemorates the 50th anniversary of one of the biggest events in American history—the assassination of President John F. Kennedy—with a new exhibition that looks at the incident from a new angle. During the Kennedys’ ill-fated trip to Texas, private art collectors in the Dallas and Fort Worth area assembled a number of works to adorn the presidential Suite 850 at the Hotel Texas. The couple took in the art in the morning before checking out and embarking on what would be President Kennedy’s last day.

The museum has gathered 13 of 16 pieces from that display for “Hotel Texas: An Art Exhibition for the President and Mrs. John F. Kennedy.” This is the first time the works have been together since their original gathering. The collection includes works from Picasso, van Gogh, Moore, and Monet. In addition to the original works, the exhibit also features material, including a video of the installation in 1963, relating to the creation of the exhibit for the president and first lady. “Hotel Texas” will be the Dallas Museum of Art from May 26 to September 15, 2013 then it will move to Amon Carter Museum of American Art in neighboring Fort Worth from October 12, 2013 to January 2014.
