Shanghai’s contemporary art scene is to receive a boost following the news that Affordable Art China will hold the first SURGE Shanghai Art Fair 2012 at River South Art Center on October 20 and 21.

It will be a diverse event, showcasing hundreds of contemporary works by emerging artists, with mixed media and photography standing beside painting and photography. A limit on price has been set in order to make the event as accessible as possible—works will be sold from a few hundred dollars to a maximum of RMB30,000 (US$4,700).

AAC has been a pioneer of Chinese contemporary art— selling work by more than 2,000 artists since its inception in Beijing in 2006.

Both recent graduates and established artists will be exhibiting their work.

Many participating artists have gone on to major international success and acclaim, including Hei Yue, Sheng Qi, Zhou Jun, and Liu Zhonghua. Some of Shanghai’s most respected galleries including Studio Rouge, Art Labor, and M97 will be taking part in the inaugural Shanghai event.

“Under the surface of the Shanghai sprawl there is an exciting circle of young artists who are passionate in their expression and reflect intelligently their experiences of the world. These fresh faced artists courageously challenge the tired cliches and perceptions of Chinese art,” said George Mitchell, the director of Studio Rouge in Shanghai. “SURGE is an exciting addition to Shanghai’s vibrant arts community and will give a voice to the new faces of China’s young creative talent and be a springboard for their discovery. We welcome and look forward to this new showcase.”

“Art should be more accessible,” said Jenny Gu of For Art Gallery. “Shanghai needs more cultural events of this kind and less of a culture of consumerism. Artworks are like the mirrors that reflect the spirit of the city. The Shanghai art market should have more diversity and this event will change the way people think about art and the way people buy art.”
