What comes to mind whenever the Maldives are mentioned? Lots of indulgence, pampering, and sun worship no doubt. Loana Resort, located on the teardrop-shaped island of Maamigili in the Maldives’ northernmost Raa Atoll injects some art, culture, and heritage into the mix of paradisiacal activities, having recently opened its doors as not only an escape fit for royalty (which is only appropriate considering this private island was once the playground of ancient kings) but also the only resort in the archipelago that serves as a hub for Maldivian culture. Two dedicated spaces—the Loama Museum and the Loama Art Gallery—showcase everything from contemporary Maldivian art to important historical artifacts from key periods of Maldivian history. Guests can also get a dose of culture first-hand with options like witnessing an archeological excavation on Maamigili or visiting a neighboring island with an expert guide to experience how local people live.

On the accommodation end, the resort boasts 150 beachfront and over-water suites and villas that are designed to have a “best-of-both-worlds” feel—coral wall facades and coconut thatched roofs are juxtaposed alongside contemporary outdoor decks and rain-showers. Also to be found at the resort are six eateries each with its own distinct offering, including Japanese fare in an open-air setting; Thai fine dining; poolside Italian cuisine; barbecue at the Beach Club; and Western, Asian, and Mediterranean food served al-fresco. When not spongeing in the cultural aspects of the resort, guests can choose from some standout activities like castaway picnics on deserted islands and dolphin-watching in a traditional dhoni boat. But of course, if lounging on breezy beaches or indulging in full-day spa treatments are on one’s wish-list, the resort is fully equipped for that too.
