Quiet Tanjung Benoa is home to a new five-star hotel

The Chedi Sakala, Bali is just inland from the Tanjung Benoa shore near Nusa Dua. Fine-dining restaurant Sakala occupies beachfront property, while the hotel, opened in October last year, is across Jalan Pratama. Three distinct areas make up The Chedi including the open-air lobby boasting views of the ocean, 14 secluded two-bedroom villas to the left of the lobby, and the main wing of 247 suites surrounding the lagoon pool.

The Look: The hotel takes hints from traditional Indonesian culture for its design from The Restaurant’s thatched alang-alang roofs to the hotel’s namesake sakala pattern that bedecks everything from glass shower partitions to batik robes. Dark hardwood flooring is continued in all guest suites along with dark accents from rattan furniture to teak latticework.

The Rooms: Suites start from a generous 54 square meters and come in one or two-bedroom configurations. Hanging light fixtures adorned with iridescent shells along with silver sculptures made in Bali’s Batu Bulan village add distinctly Balinese details to the space. Bathrooms are characteristically luxurious with ylang-ylang soaps, dual-head rain showers, and soak bathtubs. We recommend the Cabana Suites offering swim-up access from the pool. The two-story, 300-square-meter villas can accommodate up to six individuals and include complimentary club benefits such as butler service and daily sunset cocktails.

The Appeal: The Restaurant serves a daily buffet breakfast and has an array of high-end Indonesian and European options concocted by French chef Frédéric Boulay. The beautifully plated Gado Gado offers delicate vegetables in a light peanut sauce topped with thinly sliced tempeh. Guests can also enjoy signing benefits at Sakala restaurant at the beachfront. The Sakala restaurant boasts more than 200 varietals of wine and fine European dining by Boulay. Try the Balinese Baby Pork for a modern take on the Bali’s famous babi guling.

The Surrounds: For those seeking water sports and family fun, Tanjung Benoa is ideal. The location is also convenient to the famed seafood restaurants of Jimbaran, just fifteen minute’s drive away. For those looking for vibrant nightlife, however, Seminyak’s shores are one hour from The Chedi.

For those in the know: One of the best aspects of the hotel’s three-floor gym is the serene yoga studio on the ground floor with views of the lagoon pool. The Chedi will soon begin offering classes in the studio, but book a private session for optimal wellness.
