Since launching its first cruise down the Amazon River in 2008, Aqua Expeditions has built a reputation on pairing high luxury with authentic cultural experiences in this remote—and cruise-able—region of the world. Six years later, the company has launched a new cruise on the opposite side of the globe, the Aqua Mekong, a five-star boutique floating hotel that winds down its namesake river through Cambodia and Vietnam for trips of three, four, and seven days. As the longest river in Southeast Asia, the Mekong passes through bamboo-stilted villages, floating markets, ancient monasteries, and exotic jungles, and though the cruise promises to be astoundingly scenic, it is equally about discovering the region’s cultures; some 60 million people live along the river now, in communities that date back to two thousand years. Daily land excursions can be customized, though some are not to be missed, such as treks through the Tra Su Cajuput forest teeming with more than 70 bird species, endangered turtles, and painted stork; ventures into Ho Chi Minh city; and exploring the Khmer temples of Angkor Wat. And back on board, more-than-comfortable accommodations await, including 20 river-facing suites, a plunge pool, gym, library, spa, indoor and outdoor bars, screening and games rooms, and food prepared by Michelin-starred chef David Thompson, sourced from local markets and fish from the river itself.
