India: The Hemis Festival to Kick Off on June 29

Hemis Gompa, an ancient monastery in the Indian state of Ladakh, will be at the center of celebrations commemorating the advent of Buddhism in the Himalayan region from June 29 to 30. Festivities will revolve around a sacred mask dance performed by the temple’s lamas to a soundtrack of brass trumpets, cymbals, and drums. Be sure to time your visit with sunset or sunrise, when the snow-capped peaks of the Karakoram Mountains come into sharp relief.
