The first Asia solo exhibition of Seattle-born artist Joel Morrison opened at Hong Kong’s Gagosian Gallery last week. Morrison, who was educated at Central Washington University and Claremont Graduate University, draws on the everyday to derive sculptures and drawings that are anything but run of the mill.

He casts polymorphous forms from mannequins; shopping carts… even bullets, which are then cast in stainless steel. The result engages in the gamut of Western sculpture, from the Greeks to the surrealism of Marcel Duchamp—evident both in the humor and the more serious nod to the canon that are on display here.
