Kuala Lumpur Eco Film Fest Begins

The fifth annual Kuala Lumpur Eco Film Festival returns tomorrow to the University of Malaya for a weekend of local and international films. After sprouting seeds in 2008, the festival has grown across seven Malaysian states, showcasing films and running workshops designed to both inform and entertain.

Wira Rimba October 12, 7.45 p.m. Manesh Nesatnam’s film examines the highs and lows of Malaysia’s park rangers as they go about their day-to-day work at the sharp end of the battle to control deforestation.

Wild Ocean October 13, 11 a.m. Directed by Steve McNicholas, Wild Ocean was filmed over a two-year period in South Africa at Kwa Zulu Natal and the Transkei. The 2008 production displays the ocean in all its glory—from the unrelenting pitched battle between prey and predator, to the work carried out by conservationists.

Trashed October 13, 5.10 p.m. Bill Kirkos’ film looks at the economy of taking out the garbage and asks why Americans are producing more than two kilos of waste every day.

Canning Paradise October 14, 4.30 p.m. A film focusing on the effects of the tuna industry in Papua New Guinea.

Big Dream, Little Bears October 14, 6 p.m. Dr. Audrey Low gives a rare glimpse into her erstwhile stomping ground in Borneo where she worked on saving the world’s smallest bears.
