TripAdvisor has released a list of the 20 most popular destinations for mainland Chinese travelers, a group that is now the largest market for outbound tourism. TripAdvisor noted that although the traditional Chinese destination favorites Hong Kong and Macau remain popular, younger Chinese travelers are starting to go farther afield with Thailand, Taiwan, and South Korea gaining large numbers of visitors. The travel website collected its data through daodao.com, a version of TripAdvisor tailored to Chinese tourists.

According to the Chinese Tourism Academy, the county has now overtaken the United States and Germany in terms of tourists, and it is estimated that the Chinese will take 94 million trips and spend US$117.6 billion in 2013. The academy also found that 90 percent of the Chinese traveling overseas are under the age of 45 and more than 83 million people traveled abroad in 2012, an 18 percent increase over the previous year.
