Park Hyatt Opens in Chennai

Fashioned to be a quiet escape from Chennai’s groaning traffic, India’s latest five-star hotel opening (Park Hyatt Chennai, 39 Velachery Rd.; 91-44/7177-1234; chennai.park.hyatt.com; doubles from US$150) combines winsome styling with capacious interiors. Each of the 181 guest rooms features travertine marble and hand-made carpets, while the 20 suites offer stone plunge tubs and floor-to-ceiling glazing. Located next to the Guindy National Park (one of the few national parks within an Indian city), the hotel has been designed with its surroundings in mind—a lily pond acts as the center point in the inner courtyard, while specially commissioned local art fills the hotel’s public spaces. Chennai is one of the most visited cities in India— courtesy of its beaches, temples, cricket ground, and the UNESCO-listed Mahabalipuram. The hotel will also be well suited to business travelers: the international airport is only a twenty minute drive, and key business districts are also located nearby.
