Shanghai Airport Announces Major Extension

Shanghai Airport Authority announced on Thursday that Pudong International Airport is to undergo a significant expansion. The US$220 million project will add another 6,000 square meters of retail space to Terminal One and is slated to be completed in 2014.

Jia Ruijun, vice president of Shanghai Airport Authority, told shareholders that the decision was commensurate with the listed company’s strategy to increase revenue from its non-aviation business, growth in which has outstripped its core activities in take-offs and landings.

Pudong is also building fourth and fifth runways to facilitate growth in traffic– 40 million travelers passed through its arrivals and departure halls last year, and that number is expected to swell to 60 million by 2015.
