Christian Lacroix is perhaps best-known for his dramatic creations for Hermes, as well as his own haute couture line, but he has turned his hand to everything from accessories and perfumes to stage costumes for The Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Opera National de Paris—and hotels.
On September 17, Sofitel So Bangkok unveiled its new Club Signature on the 25th floor, an executive lounge designed by Lacroix for guests staying in the hotel’s So Club rooms.
An impressive surrealist piece greets guests as they enter—figures in historical French dress are finished with flowers endemic to Thailand. The lounge itself is typical of the Sorbonne-educated Lacroix—yards of color, applied with a sense of theatre and flair to create the desired images: in this case, a blend of old Siam and French Romanticism.
The lounge opens from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Breakfast is served from 6.30 a.m. to 10.30 a.m., tea from 2.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m., and cocktails from 5 p.m. to 7p.m.. Wi-Fi is free, as are newspapers and local phone calls, while the complimentary use of an iPad is another welcome addition.
Opened in February, this is the Sofitel So brand’s second property (following the December 2010 launch of the Sofitel So Mauritius) and its first in an urban setting. The French-born designer also had a hand in designing the hotel’s 238 guest rooms and suites, which feature floor-to-ceiling windows with panoramic views of Bangkok’s Lumpini Park.
