Jakarta: Skye’s The Limit

Jakarta may be all urban sprawl at street level, but from the vantage point of this rooftop roost, the views are nothing less than jaw-dropping. Perched 227 meters above the crawling traffic of Jalan Thamrin, Skye (56/F Menara BCA, 1 Jl. MH Thamrin; 62-21/2358-6996) is the latest hit from the folks behind Dragonfly and Social House, and has joined the ranks of the region’s high-altitude hot spots. One side of the 56th-floor aerie is occupied by a double-height restaurant with stone-clad walls and thick timbers that bring to mind an alpine hunting lodge, albeit one with such soigné touches as bespoke light fixtures and a striking wall mosaic of Bisazza tiles. The food, a mingling of East and West highlighted by updated Latin American street fare (sea-bass tacos, juicy oxtail-and-shiitake empanadas), is good, but the star of the show is the adjacent lounge. Here, a parade of sit-com starlets, models, and socialites helps populate an indoor-outdoor space whose tropical-resort vibe provides a surreal contrast to the pulsing cityscape beyond its terrace.  –Chris Kirkpatrick
