October is a busy month for the island of Bali—fresh from the festivities of Miss World pageant and on to the high profile delegations of the APEC summit, there’s barely a minute of tranquility between events. Come mid-October, a new crowd will descend upon Bali, a crowd made up of international authors, performers, musicians, and creatives setting up camp in Ubud. October 11 marks the start of the 10th annual Ubud Writers & Readers Festival, ongoing until October 15. The lineup will include internationally acclaimed authors including Sebastian Faulks (Birdsong, A Possible Life), Lionel Shriver (We Need to Talk about Kevin), and Lonely Planet co-founder Tony Wheeler. Preeminent Indonesian poet and author Goenawan Mohamad and award-winning writer Ayu Utami will also take part in the festival. Workshops, readings, film screenings, and art events will be aplenty during the festival, so make sure you have your daily schedule down pat. Chaired by Janet de Neefe, this year’s festival will honor Indonesia’s women’s rights pioneer R.A Kartini with its theme ‘Through Darkness to Light / Habis Gelap Terbitlah Terang.’
