Like a work of art, a good advertisement transports its readers into a different reality—and ideally sells it to them too. It’s fitting, then, that through much of the 20th century, the most lucrative form of advertising came in the form of Art Nouveau posters, whose drawings and paintings captured the consumer imaginations before airbrushing and fold-out perfume samples existed. On view at Singapore’s Ion Art Gallery from November 24 through December 1, The Art of the Poster exhibition will display a wide range of purchasable vintage posters depicting everything from champagne to Star Wars. Among the many is a selection related to travel and transport, hailing from the golden age of the 1920s through 1960s—a fiery ad for Air France’s flights to the Orient, an automobile racing through Mediterranean hills for the 1933 Monaco Grand Prix. The collection comes from Hong Kong–based Picture This Gallery, East Asia’s only established vintage poster dealer, so those who decide to commandeer one for their own walls can rest assured it’s a genuine piece of art.
