Bamboo towers studded with steaming buns are erected on the grounds of Hong Kong’s Pak Tai Temple during the annual Cheung Chau Bun Festival, which this year is scheduled to take place on April 28. In the days before safety regulations, hundreds of young men would scamper up these precarious scaffolds to grab the buns, which are thought to bring good fortune. That practice is now prohibited, but for a taste of the former frenzy head to the adjacent football field, where a tower covered in non-slip plastic pastries is the site of some government-approved bun snatching.
