Running until June 10, M+: Yau Ma Tei is the first exhibition curated by Mobile M+, Hong Kong’s new museum for visual culture. While the museum building is not slated for completion until 2017, the exhibition is Mobile M+’s first attempt to display art in an open, “rootless” setting.

Showcasing six large-scale installations by seven Hong Kong-based artists (Kwan Sheung-chi, Wong Wai-yin, Leung Mee-ping, Erkka Nissinen, Pak Sheung-chuen, Tsang Kin-wah, and Yu Lik-wai), the exhibition takes over abandoned shops, offices, and other disused spaces in Yau Ma Tei, the neighborhood of the future museum building on the border of West Kowloon. Characterized by a dynamic blend of the traditional and the modern, the area makes an apt setting for the project, which aims to “draw out specific stories that resonate with the neighborhood and the city.”
