Paying homage to its British colonial past, the Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong is set to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee. The international celebration takes place throughout this year and marks the 60th anniversary of the accession of Queen Elizabeth II. From May 27 to June 10, the hotel is offering both a Royal Afternoon Tea and a display of rare artworks created by members of the royal family.
Guests can venture up to the Clipper Lounge to view 27 artworks — including lithographs, photographs, and etchings — by the Prince of Wales, Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, and Lord Snowdon. Each item will be for sale, with the buyers receiving a certificate for a tour of the Prince of Wales’ gardens at Highgrove House in Gloucestershire.
The Royal Afternoon Tea will be prepared by the hotel’s executive chef Uwe Opocensky, who also cooked for the Queen and Prince Philip’s 50th-anniversary dinner. The menu includes Rhug Estate “coronation chicken,” Battenberg cake, and of course scones, jams, and a choice of 17 teas. Prices start at US$37 per person.
Those wishing to celebrate in style can consider the Mandarin Oriental chain’s Suite Temptations package, which offers three nights for the price of two and includes daily continental breakfast, a spa credit of about US$100, and an airport concierge service that starts before immigration. Package prices start from about US$1,000.
