Kowloon Bay’s Industrial Heritage Shapes Camlux Hotel

Most Hong Kongers regard Kowloon Bay as an industrial area, but in recent years the neighborhood has undergone a transformation with the opening of new malls and commercial buildings.

One of these is Camlux Hotel, billed as the first of its kind in the neighborhood. With its distinct coral-blue exterior, the property was originally Camel Vacuum Flask’s factory, and has 185 rooms ranging from 22 to 32 square meters. It recently celebrated its soft opening with the launch of its in-house dining venue, Café 15.

Led by the Zurich-trained chef Harry Chan, the café is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and offers dishes such as oven-baked Hasselback potatoes, club sandwich, and shredded spicy lamb racks. The café is also an homage to the building’s history, as it showcases special-edition Camel flasks that were designed exclusively for the hotel.

The flask also serves as a design inspiration for the guest rooms. Guests will discover wall lampshades shaped like the flasks’ cover. Photos of the flasks are also displayed prominently in each room.

Dubbed “retro-modern”, Camlux Hotel’s interiors were influenced by the Camel Vacuum Flask.

Other facilities in the hotel include a meeting room, conference room, and 24-hour gym. Camlux provides services such as laundry and dry cleaning, luggage storage, limousine service, and complimentary shuttle buses to Nathan Road and Kowloon Station for the Airport Express.
