Bali’s regenerative rice-growing movement is small but evolving and offers visitors to the island a unique and inspiring peek into local life, culture, and traditions. One of the best ways to immerse yourself in the countryside, quite literally, is by getting your feet dirty in the rice paddies and permaculture garden at the Subak Uma Lambing farm in Sibang Kaja village. On the half-day experience, social enterprise Astungkara Way encourages participants to kick their shoes off and roll up their sleeves for a rice-growing 101 that might include (depending on the rice cycle) growing or planting seedlings, ploughing a field with the help of a cow, and harvesting ripened stalks. The affair starts with a blessing ceremony at the family temple and ends with a delicious communal meal cooked by the owner and served in the family compound. Converts can extend the outing by making it an overnight adventure by sleeping under mosquito nets in the farm’s thatched-roof bamboo pavilion. —Penny Watson
