Jennifer Aniston may be America’s sweetheart, but a new TV commercial by Dubai-based Emirates makes it clear that when it comes to flying, it is the Gulf carrier and its premium facilities—not an American airline—that the actress prefers. Walking around the cabin only in her bathrobe, the ad shows a horrified Aniston upon being informed by a flight attendant that there are no showers or a bar in the aircraft. “This isn’t an Emirates plane, ma’am,” the attendant tells Aniston before offering her a pack of hot peanuts and a hot towel. Shortly after, the actress is shown waking up on a flatbed seat in relief, realizing it had all been nothing more than a bad dream and one she happily shares with a bartender during her visit to the bar.
Released on October 5, the ad—an obvious jab at other airlines whose facilities are yet to top that of Emirates’—quickly drew online attention, garnering nearly 1.5 million views on YouTube just two days after it went live.
“Jennifer Aniston’s appeal and effortless connection with a global audience makes her the perfect choice for our campaign,” said Boutros Boutros, Emirates’ divisional senior vice president for corporate communications, marketing and brand. “As one of the busiest women in Hollywood, Aniston, like many of our customers, enjoys downtime only when she is travelling. At Emirates, we ensure the experience is an exceptional one.” Boutros emphasized the idea was to take a “humorous approach” to showcase the airline’s products. “Her professionalism and comedic talent shone on the set, and we are very pleased with the outcome.”
