Philippe Starck, the world-renowned contemporary designer, has created everything from toothbrushes to mega-yachts, going against the grain of existing forms along the way. In a partnership with Wessco International, supplier of amenities and comfort programs to the world’s airlines, the French design icon challenges existing forms once again with the design of a sleek new airline amenity kit.
“From the beginning of the creative process, two words appeared to me: the elegance and the gift,” Starck explains. “We create such an elegant and intelligent object that it would truly become a gift. And it might be the first time that passengers will open the bag and say: Oh! This is exactly what I wanted!”
Distinctively developed for first and business class (but for no specific airline), the amenity kits feature contents that have been completely re-conceived from scratch, enhancing both elegance and functionality of the amenity kits as individual pieces and as a whole. A diverse palette of colors has been used in the collection, which consists of hard and soft versions of male, female, and unisex kits. Overall, the timelessness of the design is underlined by the sophistication of minimum.
“Starck has driven the process from the beginning, insisting on quality and innovation at every level,” says Luigi Auricchio, creative director at Wessco International. “He personally scrutinized each aspect of the modern amenity kit, from the outer shell to every individual content item.”
Wessco’s vice president of international operations, Petros Sakkis, adds: “The scope of this collaboration extends beyond amenity kits. The goal of our collaboration is nothing less than to create an unforgettable experience for people who travel.”
