Under The Volcanoes: Mesastila, Central Java
With a colonial-era plantation house at its center and views that extend across kelengkeng trees and coffee fields to the peaks of eight encircling volcanoes, MesaStila, in the Magelang highlands north of Borobudur, is an undeniably romantic place. Originally opened as the Losari Coffee Plantation Resort, its new owners recast the property as a wellness retreat in 2011, offering various health programs and fitness regimens. But this is no fat farm. Sybarites will love the individually decorated villas—antique houses relocated from elsewhere in Java with high peaked roofs, hand-carved doors, teak four-poster beds, and Javanese furnishings and objets. Dinners in the plantation house are organic and nutritious without being spartan, and the on-site Turkish steam bath, fed by pure spring water, is a draw in its own right. A stable of horses are on hand for exploring the 24-hectare property and the countryside beyond, where farming villages and the haunting remains of eighth-century Hindu temples await (Losari, Magelang; 62-298/596-333; mesahotelsandresorts.com; doubles from US$165).
