7 Mountain Resorts for an Escape from Jakarta

These hideaways, scattered between the outskirts of Bogor and the Puncak area, promise a nature-filled break for cooped-up residents of the Indonesian capital.

Jambuluwuk Puncak

Originally opened in 2006, this property was last renovated five years ago. One asset it retains? Wallet-friendly room rates. Guests at Jambuluwuk Puncak bed down in just 23 one- to four-bedroom villas, whose sizes range from 40 to about 300 square meters. The rustic design combines wood and red brick, and each villa has been named after places around the Indonesian archipelago. From their private terrace or balcony, vacationers can enjoy views of Mount Pangrango and Mount Salak.

Jambuluwuk Puncak has no shortage of family-oriented facilities on site. In addition to a restaurant, spa and two swimming pools, there are karaoke rooms, a futsal court, and a dedicated zone for ATV rides and “outbound” activities.

Le Eminence

It isn’t just Le Eminence’s location—just a 30-minute drive from Taman Bunga Nusantara and Taman Safari—that is a boon for families: the hotel boasts a comprehensive suite of amenities for all ages. These include children’s playrooms, flying fox rides, restaurants, spas, and rooftop bars.

This property, which has been operating since 2016, was built against a cliff face carved out by the stony river that divides the Ciloto area. The hotel’s riverside garden area includes a branch of Balinese restaurant Bebek Tepi Sawah. By Puncak standards, Le Eminence is enormous: it spans 15 floors from top to bottom, and all 379 rooms gaze out toward the mountain scenery. Those calming views can also be enjoyed from the fifth-floor swimming pool.

Novotel Bogor

After 22 years of operation, Novotel Bogor underwent a partial refurbishment and reopened earlier this month. Reception areas, the grand ballroom, and 75 guest rooms have all been spruced up; vacationers can rest easy knowing that the resort abides by strict health and safety standards required to attain Accor’s Allsafe certification.

The five-hectare property offers spa facilities, as well as a kid’s club, a tennis court, and a swimming pool. Its main restaurant, Verandah, serves up international fare and themed dinner buffets based around a revolving selection of Indonesian, Chinese, and regional Asian dishes, while Capriccio specializes in Italian cuisine.

Thanks to its location within Golf Estate Bogor Raya, which boasts an 18-hole golf course, this property has long been popular with those who want to practice their swing. Others are attracted to the fact that the hotel promises a stay in the cooler climes of West Java’s highlands—without having to endure the weekend traffic jams that typically clog the hill station of Cisarua. Novotel Bogor is conveniently situated on the main route between the city of Bogor and Puncak.

Pesona Alam Resort & Spa

This resort offers facilities for all ages, from a kids’ club and a futsal field to a spa and mini-golf course. In addition, The Banyan Restaurant serves various Indonesian dishes, and Halimun Lounge is an ideal spot to sip on sundowners while soaking up views of the verdant surroundings.

Located 1,200 meters above sea level, Pesona Alam makes an ideal base from which to explore the Puncak area. Early risers can breathe in the fresh mountain air with a morning walk along the jogging track in the pine forest around the hotel, while adventure-lovers should embark on an hour-long stroll to the Gunung Mas Tea Plantation.

Pesona Alam has 138 guest rooms across four categories; each room features a balcony looking out toward Mount Salak and Pangrango. For added privacy, one- to three-bedroom villas are also available.

Pullman Ciawi Vimala Hills

The first Pullman resort in West Java when it opened just last March, this property has raised the bar for luxury lodgings in the Puncak area. Its 229 rooms, including 21 villas, are spread across 14 hectares of lush gardens, while idyllic views of the trio of Mount Salak, Pangrango, and Geulis can be enjoyed from the private balconies of guest quarters.

Pullman Ciawi Vimala Hills is perched at an elevation of 600 meters, and the resort features a three-kilometer jogging track interspersed with five outdoor gyms. Other facilities include three restaurants, a pool bar, a spa and the Pullman Fit gym which has no less than four swimming pools.

Royal Tulip Gunung Geulis

Design is perhaps the main attraction of this four-year-old resort, which was the work of the prestigious architecture firm Hadiprana. The modernist-styled building blends in harmoniously with the landscape, and its lobby and restaurant are semi-open to make the most of Puncak’s cool breezes. Royal Tulip’s elegant interiors feature wooden furniture and artistic decorations selected by the architects.

Spread over hilly land, this hotel features 173 rooms, of which the entry-level deluxe rooms measure in at a generous 40 square meters. Junior suites are perhaps the right choice for traveling families, but if views are what you’re after, book a top-floor executive studio.

Royal Tulip’s main restaurant, LL One & Wine Bar, serves food throughout the day. Ideal for carnivores, poolside venue Fire Grill and Bar offers barbecue-centric dishes that use prime cuts of imported beef that are dry-aged for about a month.

Villa Puncak by Plataran

Typical of the Plataran brand, this property presents a touch of Indonesian design in a classic contemporary setting. The villas are in the form of tropical houses, each surrounded by trees and enlivened by the sound of the nearby river, while their airy interiors come with wooden furnishings and artworks nodding to either the local culture or Indonesia’s flora and fauna.

The resort comprises just four generously sized villa units starting from 215 square meters. With the intention of maximizing guest privacy, the villas are spaced quite far apart, not side-by-side like villas in other local resorts.

For family vacations, the ideal option is the two-bedroom Grand Narendra Villa, a three-story house complete with a dining room and kitchen. The other three villas, including Anandita, which was named after the daughter of Plataran’s owner, all have five bedrooms and are suitable for larger groups of friends.
