AirAsia has just announced its second new international route from Penang this year — weeks after opening an alternative flight path to Bali on October 20 — with a twice-weekly service to Phnom Penh starting on December 10. Every Tuesday and Saturday, AK 1236 is set to depart Penang at 12:30 p.m. and land in the Cambodian capital at 1:15 p.m.; the return flight, AK 1237, will take off at 2 p.m. and arrive back in Penang at 4:50 p.m. The expected journey time is one hour and 45 minutes each way. According to AirAsia, this new route will further boost the airline’s network within Asean and allow for seamless travel between Cambodia and its third-largest hub in West Malaysia.
To celebrate the upcoming launch, airasia rewards members can book promotional fares until November 27 between Penang and Phnom Penh through the “flights” icon on the airasia Super App or website. Prices start from just RM179 (roughly US$38) one way or RM428 (US$91) return for travel between December 10, 2022 and March 25, 2023.
Riad Asmat, CEO of AirAsia Malaysia said in a statement, “We’re thrilled to be launching this new route to Phnom Penh for the first time from another important hub of ours in Malaysia. Following our flight resumption to Phnom Penh and Siem Reap in Cambodia from Kuala Lumpur earlier this year, this new route further reinforces the popularity and demand for tourism in the kingdom.” He also cited a surge in demand for more flights and routes between Cambodia and Malaysia since travel restrictions were lifted. “We look forward to introducing new routes from Malaysia and beyond in line with growing demand for air travel,” Riad added.
