Checking In: Baba Beach Club, Phuket

The ultra-hip, sister brand of luxury Thai resort Sri Panwa is perfect for lovers of good music, food, and relaxation.

At the heart of the property is the beach club, where a keyhole-shaped pool is flanked by a DJ booth, bright pink daybeds, and striking, monochrome parasols.

The Look

Eclectic, hip, and photo-worthy at every turn, it’s easy to pinpoint who Baba Beach Club was made for—youthful, well-heeled travelers with a penchant for endless parties and great music. Its Phuket property, one of the two under the brand (the other is located in Hua Hin), is designed with a playful twist on the area’s distinctive Sino-Portuguese heritage. Guests will find themselves strolling through moon gates (circular openings) and passageways decorated with modernized Chinese motifs, stylishly juxtaposed with colorful graphic prints.

The 145 square-meter Gabana Villa is a spacious duplex, featuring a roomy living space downstairs and a bedroom upstairs.

The Rooms

Set against the scenic Andaman Sea and located on the unspoilt Natai Beach, Baba Beach Club offers a collection of luxury lodgings, including five-bedroom Baba Beachfront villas, two-bedroom pool villas, as well as one- or two-bedroom suites, pool suites, and penthouses. At the moment, only 16 suites are available, with more to be added throughout the rest of 2018. The 145-square-meter Gabana Villa, which I stayed in, is a spacious duplex featuring a roomy living space downstairs and a bedroom upstairs. Perfect for gatherings and parties, the villa comes with cool stone floors, dark wood accents, as well as a state-of-the-art Bose entertainment system that floods the space with a curated playlist of house and soft jazz music. Best of all, it’s only steps away from the beach club.

Baba Beach Restaurant and Baba Iki collectively offer an extensive menu of local Thai, Japanese, Chinese, Italian, and international cuisine.

The Food

Spanning two stories and overlooking the glistening pool, Baba Beach Restaurant and Baba Iki collectively offer an extensive menu of local Thai, Japanese, Chinese, Italian, and international cuisine.

Cut to the chase and order the signature Baba Beach Club Maki roll.

The Japanese dishes are particularly noteworthy—order the signature Baba Beach Club Maki roll, which comes with a texture-filled medley of shrimp tempura, tobiko, tempura crumble, topped wonderfully with a drizzle of spicy mayonnaise.

Craving a quick snack by the pool? You won’t go wrong with Baba Beach Club’s “infamous” chicken wings, which are infused with lemongrass and chili. For refreshing cocktails and juices, swim right up to Baba Beach Bar and make your orders.

When night falls, neon lamps illuminate the pool, leaving behind a beautiful glow.

Don’t Miss

Branded as a music lovers’ hotel, Baba Beach Club spares no effort in offering a regular roster of weekly pool parties and world-class guest DJs—simply check the updated schedule. At the beach club, a perma-soundtrack of house music plays from day to night, keeping the ambient upbeat. If pool parties aren’t your idea of fun, there’s plenty more to do, including complimentary activities like kayaking, stand-up paddling, and cycling around the nearby rural villages. While the spa has yet to open, guests can arrange for massages in their suite or on the white-sand beach.

Baba Beach Club, Phuket is located a 20 minutes’ drive from Phuket International Airport.
