Here’s an inflight souvenir that will continue to serve its purpose long after the journey is over.

While some airlines have asked passengers to bring their own face coverings, the UAE’s national carrier isn’t content with giving out complimentary Wellness Kits—which come with a mask, disposable gloves, and hand gel—to all its customers. First- and business-class passengers will now receive a reusable snood-style face mask with a long-lasting protective layer using MicrobeBARRIER technology, a broad-spectrum antimicrobial treatment for fabrics that has been proven to reduce the presence of germs. Made of lightweight and breathable jersey fabric, the washable snoods are more comfortable than conventional masks as they can be easily slipped on and off, and worn around the neck like a scarf.

The rollout of these new reusable masks is the latest initiative of Etihad Wellness, the carrier’s recently launched health and hygiene program. As part of the overall strategy, specially trained Wellness Ambassadors will be on hand to make sure that travelers adhere to hygiene protocols, while answering questions and sharing advice on how to stay safe throughout the journey. The multilingual Wellness Ambassadors are available through a live chat service when booking seats online, and can be approached at various points in the pre-departure process at Abu Dhabi International Airport, including check-in, screening, and at the boarding gate.

Covid-19 prevention measures at Etihad broadly reflect those in place across the aviation industry. The Gulf carrier has committed to deep clean and sanitize all aircraft upon arrival at each destination, while face masks and personal protective equipment are mandatory for cabin crew and ground staff alike. In addition, anyone flying Etihad Airways from any airport outside Abu Dhabi will need to take a PCR test within four days of departure.
