Travelers who test positive for the virus can be reimbursed for medical costs of up to 150,000 euros.
Following in the footsteps of Emirates and Flydubai, the UAE’s national airline has teamed up with AXA to introduce global Covid-19 insurance for passengers across its global network. Customers will be glad to know that there are no extra forms to fill out, as the cover is automatically included in all Etihad tickets booked for travel between now and December 31, 2020.
This new initiative is the latest addition to Etihad Wellness, the Gulf carrier’s health and hygiene program. According to a just-released press statement from the airline, “guests who are diagnosed with Covid-19 during their trip won’t have to worry about medical expenses or quarantine costs,” and the insurance will be valid worldwide for 31 days from the first day of travel.
In the same statement, Duncan Bureau, Etihad Airways’ senior vice president for sales and distribution, said: “This additional cover will not only instill confidence to travel but also reassure our guests that we are doing all we can to keep them safe and protected. As more countries start opening their borders, we are making it as easy as possible for our guests to plan their next trip, hassle free.”
Etihad passengers can claim up to 150,000 euros (about US$177,400) in medical costs and up to 100 euros (US$118) of daily quarantine costs for 14 days, though the cost of PCR tests is not included. The airline also says that customers should contact its Covid-19 assistance team as soon as they receive a positive diagnosis while abroad, as services not organized by Etihad will not be eligible for reimbursement.
